“WE ARE ST. PETE” is a unifying slogan inspired by Mayor Ken Welch, the first Black mayor in our city’s history. I wanted the mark to carry that same sense of history and progress, so I drew inspiration from protest posters of the Civil Rights Movement. The typography reflects that era of resilience and activism, while the bold use of color speaks to St. Pete’s legacy as host of the largest Pride festival in the Southeastern United States.
On average, St. Pete welcomes more than 300,000 attendees each year for Pride, making it the largest celebration of its kind in Florida. To amplify that spirit of unity and visibility each year, I design specialty t-shirts, banners, signage, and more, all proudly carrying the declaration:
We Are St. Pete.
